Physics
Project
Due: ___/___/___
This is an open project you
can take in many directions:
1) Demonstrate another one of our science terms in a unique way (like friction or inertia);
2) Create something to demonstrate the difference between potential and kinetic energy;
3) A model of a simple, compound, or complex machine using wood or other craft materials;
4) An invention or new use of an old invention involving simple machines;
5) Build something that uses one or more machines (ex. shelves use screws and a model car uses wheels and axles); or
6) Another project with teacher approval.
Students will present their inventions to class and be graded on timeliness and physics knowledge shown. Please look over the rubric to better understand the project requirements.
*Family helpers often ask how much help they should give for a student’s home project. This is a fine opportunity for the crafty or the woodworker in the family to spend some quality time with the student, however the student should be present and involved in all aspects of the project. The student will be graded on the demonstration of knowledge, not an amazing-looking project (please see the rubric). Many students have received advanced As with projects made of Lego or cardboard; many have received Cs or lower for an inability to explain amazing contraptions. I focus on students demonstrating their understanding of the fourth grade physics concepts.
**Students have worked with simple machines in third grade. Most third grade teachers have an invention project that utilizes simple machines. This is an open project, but I do ask that if you did a simple machine invention in third grade, please do something new.
