The Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe
Writing Project
You
will be writing a story similar to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
You will create four characters from our world and have them magically enter a
fantasy world that you create. The world must be unique to your imagination;
not our world, Narnia, or anything you’ve seen or
read about someplace else (like another book or magazine). You should vividly
describe the settings and characters in your world. There should be some terrible
problem in your fantasy world that your characters overcome (such as the White
Witch making it always winter in Narnia). You are
welcome to draw on people and creatures from mythology (like centaurs) and/or
to use talking animals (like the beavers), but must avoid fairy tale characters
as well as characters from television and most movies (ask me if you are in
doubt). I encourage you to make-up and describe the creatures of your world.
The
rubric follows these rules; be sure to follow them carefully:
1) 3 pages or more handwritten
/ 600 words or more typed
2) 4 unique characters from our
world are created with personality—do not use names of classmates
3) a unique fantasy world is
created and the settings are well-described
4) a terrible problem is
overcome
5) avoid stealing characters
from fairy tales, books, television, and movies (common mythological creatures
are fine)
6) use appropriate grammar
(especially paragraphs and punctuation marks)
7) use homophones correctly
(such as their, there, and they’re)
*Parents
are encouraged to help with revision. Sitting at the computer or table with
your student and discussing needed changes is appropriate; parents editing
alone are not helping their students.
